Australian Kookaburra Silver Dollar Bullion Coin
When introduced in 1990, the 300,000
issue limit of the Australian Silver
Kookaburras was oversubscribed by more
than five times, and supplies ran out
on the first day of issue. The Australian
Silver Kookaburra is the only major
silver bullion coin which changes its
exact design every year, making it also
more attractive to collectors, although
the kookaburra theme remains the same.
The Silver Australian Kookaburra was
the last of the three bullion coins
introduced by the Perth Mint. It followed
both the Gold Nugget and Platinum Koala.
The 1-Kilo version of the Kookaburra
is the largest government-issued silver
bullion coin in the world.
The Australian Silver Kookaburra is
one of the world’s most beautiful
silver coins. Legal tender under the
Australian Currency Act 1965, the Silver
Kookaburra is distinguished as a major
silver legal tender coin to annually
change design. These coins have a superior
quality finish which incorporates delicate,
proof-like frosting within the central
design. The reverse features Australia’s
unique kookaburra. Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II and a monetary denomination
are shown on the obverse.
Kookaburras are the world’s largest
Kingfisher, with a body length of up
to ½ meter. They are also known
as “laughing jackasses”
due to their chattering calls. They
form community groups within Eastern
and Southern Australia, marking and
defending their territory both with
their calls and with force, if necessary.
