British Silver Britannia Bullion Coin
The British Silver Britannia bullion
coin was issued in 1997, ten years after
the first mintage of the Gold Britannia
coin. The alloy used is Britannia silver
with millesimal fineness 958 (95.8 %)
and are struck from an admixture of
silver comprising 95.84% of silver,
with the proportion copper metal and
is the world's heaviest silver bullion
coin. These silver bullion coins are
available in 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4
ounce, and 1/10 ounce.
Silver Britannias have been released
each year beginning in 1997, when a
silver proof set was offered. In 1997
and in all subsequent even-numbered
years the reverse design has depicted
a standing Britannia figure. Since the
days of Roman Emperor Claudius, who
received the title Britannicus and inscribed
his coins with DE BRITANNIS, Britannia
has been associated with Great Britain
and her coins. This age-old symbol now
graces the silver £2 Britannia's
reverse. Beginning in 1999 and continuing
in odd-numbered years, a series of alternate,
non-repeating depictions of Britannia
have replaced the standing figure on
the reverse.
