Originally designed by Eric Sewell, the iconic royal arms has been reimagined on this bullion coin by designer Timothy Noad. The quartered shield prominently displays the three passant guardant lions of England in the first and fourth quadrants. In the second quadrant, Scotland is represented by a rampant lion within a double tressure flory-counterflory, while the third quadrant features a harp symbolizing Ireland.
Supporting the shield, the crowned English lion stands on one side, while the Scottish unicorn is positioned on the other. Encircling the shield is the Garter circlet inscribed with "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" (Shame on he who thinks evil of it), along with the inclusion of the Leek of Wales.
A staple of British coinage for centuries, the royal arms symbolizes the strength and prestige of the United Kingdom’s monarchy. Still used today as a mark of authority and identity, the royal arms also appears on the Royal Standard—a banner flown from royal residences when the monarch is present.
