The Arizona 1 Goldback
Set against the desert landscape of southern Arizona in the early 1800s, the Arizona One Goldback honors the virtue Temperentia (Temperance) — a symbol of quiet strength, balance, and harmony. The design reflects the Mexican era of Tubac, a formative period following Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821.

In the background stands Mission San José de Tumacácori, one of Arizona’s oldest and most significant landmarks. Founded in 1691 by Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, the mission became a cornerstone of faith and culture in the region. Under Mexican rule, Tumacácori continued to serve as a spiritual center for local families, even through hardships brought by scarce resources and Apache raids. The nearby town of Tubac, established as a presidio in 1752, later became part of the Mexican state of Sonora. Together, the mission and town reflect Mexico’s enduring legacy of faith, resilience, and community along the Arizona frontier.

At the center of the design stands a graceful woman dressed in an elegant 19th-century Mexican gown. Her embroidered skirt represents the union of Indigenous, Spanish, and Mexican traditions that shaped Arizona’s cultural identity. Around her, the desert flourishes with rich symbolism: the saguaro blossom (Arizona’s state flower) embodies resilience, the cactus wren sings of resourcefulness, and the two-tailed swallowtail butterfly drifts gracefully through the scene. A desert tortoise and javelina rest at her feet, symbolizing endurance and perseverance, while corn, chiles, and prickly pear honor the land’s bounty and the Mexican families who cultivated it.

Above, a Harris’s hawk soars across the desert sky, representing focus, cooperation, and balance. The pairing of Tubac and Tumacácori serves as a reminder that Mexico’s influence helped shape southern Arizona’s enduring spirit of faith and community.
