The Legacy of the Queen’s Beasts

At Her Majesty The Queen’s coronation in 1953, ten heraldic beasts stood guard—sculpted by James Woodford RA for the Westminster Abbey ceremony. Each six-foot-tall figure symbolized the royal lineage and heraldic traditions inherited by the young Queen. These creatures drew inspiration from the King’s Beasts of Henry VIII, still seen along the bridge at Hampton Court Palace.

Today, the original Queen’s Beasts are housed at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, while stone replicas carved by Woodford stand watch at Kew Gardens in the UK. The mythical and powerful beasts—lion, griffin, falcon, bull, yale, greyhound, dragon, unicorn, and horse—have gone on to inspire a modern classic: The Queen’s Beasts coin series, designed by acclaimed Royal Mint artist Jody Clark.
