In 1986, The Perth Mint introduced the Gold Nugget series, with the release of the 1 oz Gold Nugget coin. The design on the reverse side of the coin featured various images of Australia's iconic gold nuggets. The obverse side featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
