We know that bullion can come in many shapes and sizes, such as coins, rounds, and bars, but we have heard from new investors who were surprised their recent coin purchases were slightly different sizes. The physical size of a coin is generally proportional to its weight and precious metal content, therefore, one ounce (1 oz) coins are typically larger in size compared to 1/10 oz coins. However, these differences are often so small that it’s difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye.
For example, one ounce coins, such as the American Gold Eagle contain one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of precious metal. These coins are larger and thicker compared to smaller denominations (such as 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, or 1/10 oz). Generally, as the weight decreases, the thickness and diameter of the coin decrease accordingly. This is done to maintain a consistent appearance and feel across different denominations.
